When solar radiation reaches Earth's surface, it passes through the clear atmosphere, warms the land, and then is released as infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor trap some of this heat, maintaining a warm enough climate to support life. This process is known as the natural greenhouse effect. However, human activities are raising the levels of these gases, intensifying the effect and causing global warming.
